Lafayette Consolidated Government’s (LCG) Public Works Department and Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) is once again offering a way for residents to save money, conserve water, and reduce storm-water runoff through its popular Rain Barrel Program. This year the subsidized rain barrel is available for purchase to the first 300 customers in the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish.
Rain barrels are designed to capture rainwater from rooftops and recycle it into free, non-potable water that can be used to water flowers, plants or a lawn, wash a vehicle, and other outdoor water-related purposes. By collecting and using rainwater, customers are able to supplement their tap water usage and save money on their water bill, all while also conserving a vital natural resource. Capturing rainwater that would otherwise flow into the Bayou Vermilion also reduces the amount of surface pollutants from being introduced into the local watershed.
Due to popular demand, a limited supply of 300 rain barrels is available for a discounted price of $37.50 to first-time Rain Barrel Program participants. The program is limited to Lafayette Parish residents, and this special pricing is available for one barrel per LUS residential water customer. Additional barrels for new or existing Rain Barrel Program participants may be purchased for $49.50. All orders must be placed by April 27, 2017 and will be available for pick up on May 13 at the Dean Domingues Compost Facility, located at 400 Dugas Road.
